This trend continued to the very end of the year, an example is when scrap metal prices went from $367 per ton in December of 2018 to only $220 per ton in November of 2019.
The low cost per ton of scrap metal is the number one reason why junkyards don’t pay as much for a junk car today.

What documents do I need to scrap my car?
The documents needed to lawfully scrap a junk car are:
- The vehicle registration documents
The registration or V5C is the most important document you need when selling your car, whether you are planning on scrapping the car by selling it to an auto salvage yard or anyone else for that matter.
This document proves that you are the owner of the auto truck for sale and prevents unauthorized sales.
- An up to date photo ID and proof of address
Some auto recyclers will offer cash for junk cars to anyone, but in order to protect themselves, you need to provide them with a photo ID or passport and an up to date home utility bill have records of the seller.
Will an auto parts junkyard take my car without title?
Most junkyards will not buy a car truck without a title, but the few that will buy a car or truck without a title will require more documentation from you to protect themselves.
