Great price and service. Only thing bad about this place is the parking lot but i can overlook that at a salvage joint. Got me in a coil pack for $26, and comes with a 30 day warranty (it's a 'no refund' kinda place, but I would def take store credit with these fine folks)

Budget OEM Used Fuel Pump: Find Great Deals at Your Local Junkyard

If you want to keep your car running well without spending a lot of money, buying a used OEM fuel pump is a great idea. Local junkyards, like the ones listed on our website, U-Pull-It.com, have lots of good used auto parts, including fuel pumps, at great prices. Let's see why getting a used fuel pump from a trusted junkyard can be a smart, affordable, and reliable option for your car.

Why Buy a Quality Used Fuel Pump?

New car parts can be very expensive, and buying used parts can save you a significant amount of money. Choosing a used fuel pump can be a cost-effective solution that allows you to maintain your car without breaking the bank.

Buying an OEM used fuel pump instead of a new one can save you a lot of money. A used fuel pump usually costs 50-75% less than a new one, which could save you hundreds of dollars. Plus, you can save time since junkyards often have many parts available right away. This means you can get what you need on the same day instead of waiting for a new part to arrive.

Finding the Right Fuel Pump at a Junkyard

Finding the right fuel pump for your car or truck at a junkyard can be easy if you follow these steps:

  • Interchange System: Many junkyards use a system that helps find parts that fit different makes and models. Just give the vehicle's make, model, and engine size to the junkyard staff, and they can help you find the right part.
  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number): Bringing your vehicle's VIN is a good idea to make sure you get an exact match. This number helps the staff check that the fuel pump will work with your vehicle's fuel system.
  • Visual Inspection: If you know what the part looks like, you can do a visual inspection to make sure you get the right one. Look at things like connectors, fuel lines, and mounting points to make sure they match.

For more information about getting reliable used parts, visit our guide on how to choose the best parts at a junkyard.

New vs. Used Fuel Pumps: Pros and Cons

When deciding between a new fuel pump and a used one, it's helpful to know the pros and cons of each:

Fuel Pump TypeProsCons
New Fuel PumpLonger warranty, no prior wear, reliable performanceHigher cost, can take longer to get
Used Fuel PumpMuch cheaper, available immediately at junkyardsMay have unknown wear or a shorter lifespan, warranty may be shorter

Overall, used fuel pumps are a cost-effective option if you are looking to save money, while new fuel pumps provide longer warranties and higher reliability. Choose based on your specific budget and needs.

OEM vs. Aftermarket Fuel Pumps

There are also OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and aftermarket fuel pumps:

Fuel Pump TypeDescriptionProsCons
OEM Fuel PumpsMade by the original manufacturerUsually fit better, better qualityMore expensive
Aftermarket Fuel PumpsMade by other companiesCheaperMay not fit as well or last as long

Why Are Junkyard Fuel Pumps Usually in Great Condition?

People often wonder why junkyard fuel pumps are usually in good condition. Most of the time, cars end up in junkyards because of problems that aren't related to their fuel pumps or other important parts. Cars might be scrapped after small accidents, cosmetic issues, or engine problems. Since the fuel pump wasn't the reason the car was scrapped, it is often still in good condition and can work just as well as a new part.

Learn more about why salvage parts are often a good choice for your vehicle here.

Risks and Considerations When Buying Used Fuel Pumps

While buying a used fuel pump can save money, there are some risks to think about. However, a good warranty can help mitigate many of these risks by providing assurance that you can return or exchange the part if it doesn't work as expected. When choosing a warranty, look for coverage that includes at least 30-90 days and ensures you have enough time to properly test the pump after installation. This way, you can feel more confident in your purchase.

  • Unknown Wear and Tear: The pump may have wear that isn't obvious.
  • Shorter Lifespan: Used pumps usually don't last as long as new ones.
  • How to Lower These Risks: To lower these risks, try to test the pump before buying, ask about warranty coverage, and check for any visible damage.

Tools for Removing a Fuel Pump from a Junkyard

Remember to check with the junkyard about tool rental availability and their policies before you visit. This can help you avoid any surprises and ensure you have everything you need to remove the fuel pump.

If you are going to a self-service junkyard to take out a fuel pump yourself, make sure you have these tools:

  • Socket Set and Ratchet: To take off bolts and fasteners.
  • Pliers and Screwdrivers: You’ll need both flathead and Phillips screwdrivers.
  • Fuel Line Disconnect Tools: To safely disconnect the fuel lines.
  • Jack and Jack Stands: To lift the car if you need to get to the fuel pump from underneath.
  • Multimeter: This is useful for checking if the pump works before you remove it.

Some junkyards also have tool rentals, so ask the staff if you need to borrow a tool. For more tips on getting parts from a junkyard, check out our article on how to safely remove used car parts.

How to Test a Used Fuel Pump Before Purchasing

Before buying a used fuel pump, it's a good idea to test it:

  • Multimeter Test: Use a multimeter to check if the fuel pump is working properly. A good pump will have the right resistance level.
  • Visual Signs: Check for rust, corrosion, or any physical damage.

Self-Service vs. Full-Service Junkyards

Different junkyards have different pricing models and ways for you to get parts. Self-service junkyards tend to have lower prices because you do the work of finding and removing the parts yourself. On the other hand, full-service junkyards charge more for the convenience of having staff locate and remove the parts for you, which is helpful if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself.

If you’re new to junkyards, here is a list of the best junkyards for used auto parts to help you get started. Decent-size Junkyards or salvage yards have over a million used auto parts in stock at any given moment; this includes parts like fuel pumps that are often interchangeable with multiple vehicle makes and models, which makes it very easy to shop for used parts for most vehicles.

Warranty Coverage and Quality Inspection

A good junkyard will give you a warranty on used parts, usually for 30 to 90 days. While warranties are different at each junkyard, they often cover part defects but not labor costs. Make sure to ask about return policies and warranty details before buying a used fuel pump. Reliable junkyards also inspect and test parts to make sure they work well, so you can trust that the OEM used fuel pump meets the necessary standards.

To learn more about how used parts are inspected, read our post on warranty options at salvage yards.

Recognizing When You Need a New Fuel Pump

It’s important to know the signs of a failing fuel pump so you can replace it before it causes problems. Common symptoms include:

  • Engine Sputtering: Your engine may sputter, especially when driving at high speeds.
  • Loss of Power: The car may lose power, especially when going uphill or towing.
  • Difficulty Starting: If the fuel pump is failing, your car may struggle to start.

Make sure to diagnose the issue properly before buying a replacement. This will help you avoid buying a part you don’t need.

Installation Tips and Professional Assistance

If you decide to install the fuel pump yourself, follow these basic safety tips:

  • Relieve Fuel Pressure: Make sure to relieve the fuel system pressure before starting.
  • Work in a Well-Ventilated Area: Fuel fumes can be dangerous, so always work in a well-ventilated space.

If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, consider getting help from a professional mechanic. Fuel systems can be tricky, and it’s best to be safe.

Alternative Sources if Junkyards Don't Have the Part

If you can't find the fuel pump you need at a junkyard, consider these options:

  • Online Marketplaces: Look for reputable online retailers or forums where used parts are sold.
  • Rebuilt or Refurbished Pumps: Rebuilt pumps are a middle-ground option. They are used pumps that have been fixed up to work well again.

Junkyards as a Source for Reliable and Affordable Parts

Customer Reviews and Junkyard Reputation

When buying from a junkyard, it’s important to make sure they are reputable. Here are some tips:

  • Check Reviews: Look up customer reviews online to see if others had good experiences.
  • Quality Assurance: Choose junkyards that offer testing and warranties on their parts to make sure you’re getting something reliable.

How Junkyards Help You Save on Auto Repairs

Junkyards are a great place to save money on auto repairs. They offer high-quality used auto parts at affordable prices, making them an ideal choice if you want to fix your car without breaking the bank. Here’s how they can help:

  • Affordable Used Parts: Junkyards provide high-quality used fuel pumps and other system components at competitive prices, which makes repairs much more affordable.
  • Interchange System: Many junkyards have an interchange system that can help you find parts that fit your vehicle. Even if they don’t have a fuel pump for your exact car, they may find another make and model that uses the same fuel pump. This makes finding the right part faster and easier.
  • Quality Inspection and Warranties: Junkyards often inspect parts to make sure they meet high standards. Many also offer warranties for 30-90 days, so you can feel confident that the part will be reliable and perform well.
  • Recycled and Reliable Parts: Junkyards help the environment by providing recycled auto parts. Buying used parts like fuel pumps keeps working components out of landfills, while providing a reliable alternative to aftermarket parts.

What Does a Car Fuel Pump Do and Why Is It Important?

A fuel pump is a crucial part of your car’s fuel system. It moves fuel from the fuel tank to the engine, so the car can run smoothly. Without a working fuel pump, your car’s engine won’t get the fuel it needs, which means the car won’t start or could stop running while driving. Here’s why a fuel pump is important:

  • Supplies Fuel to the Engine: The fuel pump makes sure that fuel gets from the tank to the engine at the right pressure, so your car can run smoothly.
  • Keeps the Engine Running Smoothly: If the fuel pump doesn’t work well, your engine might not get enough fuel, which could lead to sputtering, stalling, or loss of power.
  • Vital for Vehicle Reliability: A working fuel pump is needed to keep your vehicle running smoothly and reliably. A bad fuel pump can cause serious issues, leaving you stranded.

Benefits of Choosing a Junkyard for Fuel Pump Replacement

Choosing a junkyard for your fuel pump replacement offers several benefits:

  • Wide Range of Used Fuel Pumps: Junkyards have a large selection of used fuel pumps from different makes and models, helping you find a reliable part that fits your car.
  • Cost Savings: A used fuel pump is often more affordable than buying a new one. You can save a lot on your repair bill by choosing a used part.
  • Warranty Coverage: Many junkyards provide warranty coverage on their parts, giving you confidence in the quality and reliability of the used fuel pump.

I called and asked for a tow from my old apartment to my new one. Once the driver arrived, he asked if I wanted to take it to one of their shops to be looked at instead of towing it home. I said yes, and asked the fee. The driver told me $85 for the tow and $69 for the diagnostic but the diagnostic will be waived if I get it fixed. I’m like okay, we arrive at the shop and Haley gets my name and phone number. I leave and they call back and said oh it’s your starter and it’s $600. I then went to the store, offered to bring my own part and they said they would charge me $249 for bringing my own. At this point I didn’t even want to use the services because it seemed underhanded. Most every customer in the waiting area seemed disgruntled so I asked them if they could just tow it to my home. I agreed to pay the addition $85 to have it towed again plus the $69 diagnostic fee. At this point I just wanted my car. This was at 2:00pm by 5pm my car still had not been towed to me. I called the driver from earlier. He said he should be at my home by 6:45pm. By 7:30pm my vehicle still hasn’t arrived. I called the shop back and was told that my car would be brought to me in the morning because my keys were locked in the shop and the shop was closed. By this time I’m livid because you’ve proven to me you cannot be trusted and you all aren’t honest people. You’re just looking for a way to get money. I’m 8 months pregnant and I don’t have time for shenanigans. I’m praying they bring me my vehicle in the morning. This was by far the worst experience I’ve had and I’m upset because I trusted you with my business, paid you my hard earned money and you all basically just got money from me and still haven’t given me my vehicle. I’m highly disappointed and I wouldn’t recommend this business to anyone!

They have very low rates but uses a bait and switch tactic to get you to buy other items. Example: I went to get a wheel alignment. They said the price was $40. I'm thinking that's a deal. Then they tell me that for ALL alignments, they are required to do an inspection. The inspection cost $40. If ANYthing is found during the inspection, they we ould tell you, take pictures, and you are required to have it fixed before they do an alignment. First they tell me I need a right front tire, because if I don't get the tire, they won't do the alignment. So, I agree to get the tire. After they have installed the tire, then they tell me I need a upper control arm. I asked how much was that going to be and they told me $543.86. They proceeded to tell me I needed these on both sides. They told me they would take pictures of the findings. They only had a video of the mechanic wobbling the right front tire. But, they told me and documented the driver side front tire. Seems as though they left the wheel lugs loose then wiggled the tire as they recorded it. I say this because I had just had Tie rod ends, control arms, ball joints, and wheel bearing checked on Friday and I only drove about 100 miles to Montgomery. They just made over $80 bucks for a $30 tire, which I never would have bought if I knew they weren't going to do the alignment. And a $40 inspection that the results wasn't revealed to me until after they sold me the tire under the false insinuation that with that purchase, I would get the as alignment. Be very careful, these guys seem very shady. I will be checking their results with another shop today. If they were truthful, I will return and modify my review. But until then, watch out for the "Bait & Switch" tactic from C & A Mobile Tire and Auto.

Okay I came up there waited for a hour just for they to tell me that me rack and pinion was broke and it will be $600 for them to fix it.. so I said no ma’am can I have my car back and they said I still have to pay $40 something dollars because they did a inspection which was not true and I was never inform about that I still have to pay.. so I paid the $40 and something and i went to two more tire places both of the tire place said aint nothing wrong with my rack and pinion..
